Fundraising for Leukaemia Research, 1980

It was a special occasion in Blantyre Miners’ Welfare in March 1980 when the regulars presented a whopping cheque for £500 to Leukaemia Research.

Celtic players Alan Sneddon and George McCluskey made the presentation to Mrs May Naddell and Mrs Ann McPherson, officials of the L.R. fund.

The money was raised by club officials and members as part of the Hamilton Advertiser ‘Lynn Gallacher appeal’. (Lynn aged 4 at the time had leukaemia and her family were raising money for research). The Hamilton Advertiser launched their own appeal which raised over £5,000 from generous readers. Lynn was attending the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Glasgow every fortnight. Her mum Eileen was thrilled with the funds raised and commented to reporters at the time that Lynn was thankfully keeping better. Mrs Ellen McKenna, Lynn’s grandmother hoped to organise a show in the Auchinraith Miners Welfare where she was manager.
