Martin Weir, a friend of this page and keen metal detectorist recently messaged me about his latest, local find.
He told me, “I’ve got another find waiting to be returned to me from the museum in the next year regarding the former Castle at Calderwood. I found another interesting object which was taken by the museum and is still going through the treasure admin process. It’s a dagger or sword hanger from the 17th-18th century.”
“I found it while mudlarking near a path connecting Allers kennels and I believe, although still waiting for museum confirmation, that it may have belonged to one of the Maxwell nobles of Calderwood. Here is the item.”
Remarkably, this is an item similar, or identical to the one which Sir Maxwell wears in this depiction!
Martin hopes to find out soon if the find will be returned to him.
