A strange sight in my garden. Winter mushrooms, growing in a near perfect circle! It’s not the first time I’ve seen this and I read once this can happen near the roots of large trees. As a child, I used to call this phenomenon a “fairy ring” and was surprised when searching online to find that this is a common name for this arc of fungi. Apparently growth moves outward from the centre, and when the nutrients in the center are exhausted, the center quickly dies, forming a living ring, from which the fairy ring name arises.
Anybody else seen this in Blantyre?
Fairy rings are the subject of much folklore and myth worldwide—particularly in Western Europe
