1897 Newspaper Snippet

I had to smile reading this snippet from a local newspaper in March 1897.

In the Hamilton Herald paper, speaking of loud noise in the District, a miner wrote, “I can confirm the whistle of a locomotive can be heard at 3,300 yards away, the noise of an engine at 3,000 yards. The bark of a dog at 1,800 yards, the roll of a drum or barrel at 1,600 yards, the croak of a frog at 600 yards, a dinner bell from 500 yards….. and the wife’s call tae get out o’ bed, from 3 foot 7 inches.”
