Livingstone Memorial Choir

As the Nation celebrated Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee on 20th and 21st June 1897, various events and acknowledgements took place in Blantyre.

The choir members of Livingstone Memorial church and their Bible class opted for a ‘drive’ to Louden Hill. Photographs were taken and everybody enjoyed themselves. Pictured is the Livingstone Memorial Choir in this remarkably clear photo, previously unseen online. Photographer David Ritchie is 5th from the back right.

Their Sabbath School (Sunday School) trip also saw about 400 people head off to Blantyre Farm. The party left the Livingstone Memorial Church Hall in about 14 conveyances, each horse drawn. Preceded by the brass band, there was bunting along the route and much flag waving. However, owing to the inclemency of the weather, they returned back to the hall earlier than planned. An address was given about the “Queen’s Life’ mostly for the benefit of youngsters.
