Today’s School photo travels back in time some 111 years ago to 1912. In the year which the Titanic sank, just 2 years before WW1, these boys were pictured in the gym hall of the Calder Street school along with their teachers.
At this time the School sat alone on Calder Street, directly opposite a brand new police station. However, aside from that, this was still a fairly rural location. No Miners Welfare, No Health Centre or housing behind. Beyond Calder Street, all the way up to Main Street, just fields.
There’s not too many smiles in this photo as usual for the era. Imposed discipline and required obedience on the faces of most of these kids. It’s a nice clear photo for being so old.
With thanks to Alan Scullion for another great Blantyre school photo of old.

I wonder what their names were in this photo
