Nicol, Watch Repairs, 1901

An advert for a Blantyre business I’ve only just become aware of. Nicols of High Blantyre, conducted watch repairs from their premises at the top of Broompark Road, at the junction of Main Street. This advert dates to 1901 and I think they were short lived, so it is little wonder I’m not aware of the business.

The advert states they were based at Causeystanes, opposite the quoiting green (which means they would have been based in the former tenement buildings next to Blakely’s. The quoting green was across the road (where now Ally Bally Bee Nursery is)

Nicol, was the business to go to for watches, clocks and jewellery. Watched from 7s 6d upwards, not cheap at the time. Bought watches came with guarantees and an offer was on for Metal Hunting Lever watches, price 11s 6d, the ideal watch for “dirty work”, perhaps appealing to agricultural labourers and miners. Clocks from 2s 6d on sale too, as well as jewellery.

The business even offered a service where they would go and collect the watch from you, then return it later, very convenient for the customer.

I don’t have other notes about Nicol’s watch business but this is certainly a good start.
