Here, in the 1920’s, a hundred years ago is High Blantyre Main Street, photographed from Priestfield looking eastwards towards Hamilton. This is a little difficult to put into context for none of these buildings remain.
The photo captures such an everyday scene of life in the 1920’s. The hustle and bustle of shoppers, the business activities going on, the lack of traffic. The shops are at Gardiner’s Buildings, a former tenement which is now the entrance to the carpark between Ladrbokes and Day Today. Ladbrokes today would be roughly opposite where the vehicle is.
At the very left of the photo is the former Tollbooth which once sat directly across from Broompark Road junction and would now be Jinxy’s Bakery and Gilbrides Pharmacy. Needless to say, this is an area of Blantyre which has hugely changed.
