Wages Building, c1900

A couple of excellent photos well over a century old. Pictured around 1900 or so (but certainly before 1903) is the Wages Office building at Blantyre Works. The building was not isolated or detached at that time as it is now, but instead then was still terraced.

At the time, the first suspension bridge was situated some distance upstream and was not on the immediate right hand side of this building , as it is today.

This picture does actually look vaguely familiar, but there were buildings to the left of this photo when it was taken, which were later demolished. One of the photos shows many slates broken or missing, so I’m sure the building must have leaked.

The Wages building was renovated as a modern home and remains today as one of the most unique and lovely buildings in Blantyre.
