Demolition Calder Street School, 2011

Near the end of June 2011, Contractors moved in to demolish Calder Street Secondary School. The Intermediate school which opened in 1912, was just 1 year short of its Centenary, though news of its imminent demolition and a wrongly written account (by others) of it opening in 1910, led to the school actually celebrating a centenary, shortly before it was demolished.

The school had become no longer fit for purpose, damp and with major issues not only with wiring but plumbing and central heating. With a new Government in Holyrood, it was time for the promise of renewing all of Blantyre’s schools with the current, modern state of the art new schools.

The new Auchinraith Primary School was built alongside it and completed prior to the demolition of the old Calder Street School.

These photos are a good reminder of the high ceilings and tall, slim doorways within the building and the red sandstone blocks of the facade. Whats your memories of this school?

With thanks to the Meek Family for sharing these photos to Blantyre Project.
