Penny Robertson who lives in Australia shared this charming photo. Pictured, seated on the left is her grandmother, Blantyre woman Margaret McQuater. Margaret is about aged 21 in this photo, and appearing with her are fellow work colleagues, all typists during the 1910s. The family lived at Joanna Terrace at the time.
Margaret would marry Daniel Sprott and together, they went to Australia to live. Penny told me, “We were always so proud of our grandparents. They were really wonderful people – the salt of the earth – and we marvelled that they had come so far across the globe, just so that my grandmother might have a chance at life after being diagnosed with TB. To leave family and friends behind must have been such a wrench.”
