Boatland Foundations

A few weeks ago after some heavy rain, a sinkhole appeared not from the side of the River Clyde at Blantyreferme. At Boat Jocks to be precise in an area officially known as Boatland.

The discovery was made by Ian Turner, who shared these photos with kind thanks. When it first appeared it was full of water but when that subsided a few days later, stone blocks were exposed. This looks like it was the foundations for the former houses at Boatland, which once had beautiful orchards behind.

This does look fairly deep, so worth staying clear of for now. The area around here was extensively mined, with the Blantyreferme Collieries and Bings once only a stonethrow away. Something is certainly going on below this area and I’m willing to bet it’s to do with mining.
