The second phase of the A725 East Kilbride Expressway opened in High Blantyre in October 1978.
As pictured in this aerial shot, it showed clearly a modern, expensive new road for Blantyre had been constructed, this shot showing the end of Douglas Street and Hillhouse Road. There was no initial large roundabout there and you’ll notice also no sliproads on or off built yet. Douglas Street ended abruptly at a T junction, taking you up to Sydes Brae, or to the left to Hamilton. This promotional shot shows the opening and lack of any vehicles on what is now one of the busiest roads in Lanarkshire.
