This wee Blantyre lassie is Miss. Jessie Warnock Ritchie and the photo was taken in 1898, around 122 years ago! I’ve been looking at her early life.
Jessie was born on 11th October, 1896 at School Lane, High Blantyre. The daughter of David Ritchie, once a travelling joiner and Mary Ann Fleming (married in Strathaven 7th December 1888). Just before becoming a teenager, Jessie later moved to Broompark Avenue and had been schooled at Hunthill Road. The ‘Warnock’ middle part of her name may have had a connection to her father’s employers Warnock & Walker, also joiners and builders of many homes in Blantyre.
Subject of early photography had to remain still for a good photo and moving would blur the image somewhat. Despite being a 2 year old however, this photo still turned out well and little Jessie was clearly fond of her doll. Adding dating perspective to this picture. It was taken a year after Queen Victoria’s Jubilee year, whilst she was still on the throne.
