A Blantyre boy has been crowned Scottish Intermediate Boxing Champion! Straight into Blantyre’s ‘Ultimate Hall of Fame’ and a mention in the “Blantyre People” forthcoming book.
Jacob Naismith (11) lives in Blantyre and trains and fights with O’Neils Amateur Boxing Club in Cambuslang.
In an exciting match, Jacob who weighs 35.5 kg was fighting in the Scottish intermediate championships held at Boxing Scotland’s High Performance centre in Bridgeton. He beat Sonny Gow (Doon Valley) unanimously in the semi finals last weekend at Ravenscraig and went on to fight Thomas O’Reilly (Sparta) yesterday, Saturday 1st February 2020, winning on a 3:2 split decision.
Jacob is now the [born in 2008/2009] 2020 Scottish intermediate champion. In the coming weeks he’ll compete in the Western District championships and the Scottish Schoolboy championships.
It’s great to be able to record the achievements of contemporary people in Blantyre as well as the past. Well done Jacob. An incredible achievement, I’m sure you’ll agree.
In this touching photo, Jacob is pictured with his opponent. It’s the mark of a true sportsman to be friends before such a fight, and remain friends after! Such respect.
Hi Rosemary – it is correct. Like junior football, junior boxing lists their birth years. I agree it is confusing to do that, so i’ve clarified it by inserting 2020 and mentioned that the 2008/2009 dates are the years competitors are born in. This is forever confusing when people send in stories about their childrens sporting accomplishments. Seeing 2008/2009 Juniors winning something in 2020, will always confuse me too!
Do you really mean 2008/09 champion? … Read it through twice and think it must be 2019/20 ? …. Having said this, I love the Blantyre Project – always look for the postings in my e-mail each day !!
