How about these for a sorry picture! This is the east end of Glasgow Road. The last part of the Co-Op building came down in 1981 and with nearby tenements already demolished, this part of the town had literally become a wasteland.
Pictured from the end of former Jackson Street, Glasgow Road cuts through the photo with the lorry at the top of Forrest Street, where now Andy’s Tyres is. Of course it wasn’t long before this area was hive of activity. The construction of the A725 Expressway and new bridges, the building of the carwash and Trading Estate.
There’s no doubt about it though, this part of Blantyre in 1981 painted a bleak picture.
