The June Stewart Centre

Mrs. June Stewart– Blantyre’s Priestfield Senior Citizens Hall has been renamed the June Stewart Centre.

The decision was taken by councillors at a meeting of the Community and Enterprise Resources committee on Tuesday 4thJune 2019, in response to a proposal from the hall’s management committee and backed by Depute Council Leader, Councillor Maureen Chalmers.

June, who died in May 2018, was a well-known community campaigner and activist who had been involved with the hall since it opened almost 40 years ago. As well as being secretary of the committee, she worked in the kitchen and organised a variety of trips and events. Throughout the wider town she was highly regarded as a champion of the community, with Blantyre and its residents at the heart of all she did. The committee heard that consultation was carried out on the proposal to rename with overwhelming support from the current management committee, which has committed to fund any works associated with the change.

Local members, June’s family and the community of Blantyre were also supportive of the plan. Said Councillor Chalmers: “June was the drive behind the success of Priestfield Hall and its activities. She was well known for getting things done and for always having a good eye for a bargain. The care, support and activities available in the hall are testament to her understanding of what was needed and her many years of service. She is sorely missed.”
