As 1978 rolled into 1979 with so much uncertainty about business in Blantyre, there was one company who still had a smile.
Glen Travel (staff pictured) proudly announced their 1979 holiday bookings were doing very well, with some prices still held at 1978 rates. In particular flights to Canada and America were popular.
Glen Travel’s policy of employing senior, experienced staff was a good formula. They were delighted when in August 1978, Tom Blair (pictured right) joined them from Ellerman Travel in Glasgow. Tom, a local man had been in the travel industry all his working life and he was well known being a Church Elder at Blantyre Old Parish Church.
The staff not only worked hard, they enjoyed their holidays to some far off places too. That year alone, they had visited Bangkok, Benidorm, Barbados, Denmark, Holland, Madeira, Majorca, New York, Rio de Janiro, Sardinia and Toronto! When they talk of holidays to sell to the customer, you could usually be assured of first hand knowledge!
As they looked forward to moving premises to the ‘then forthcoming’ Clydeview Shopping Centre, Director David Glen, left reporters with these words:
“We may grow a lot in future, but we will never loose the personal touch. That’s what the people of Blantyre like and that’s what they’ll keep getting from this firm.”
