I managed to find out a little more.
Thomas Stewart Brown was born on 28th November 1878 at Stonefield, Blantyre. He was the son of Archibald Brown and Mary Gray (who had married in 1869 at East Kilbride). The birth certificate of baby Thomas is attached.
In 1881, Thomas aged just 2, was living at Auchinraith with his parents with 5 elder siblings and 1 younger. His oldest brother Alexander was 21, and his mother being only 31 at the time, would suggest Alexander was not the child of this woman.
