On Sunday 18th July 1968, the goods shed at Blantyre Railway Station burned down. Two fire brigade units attended but the wooden structure was a raging inferno and left practically only the brick chimney standing. The devastation was so thorough that the structure had to be demolished entirely by British Rail the following Monday 19th July 1968. It was thought that children had set it deliberately alight.
