By September 1979, the new Saint John Ogilvie Chapel on Broompark Road was just about constructed. However, fire broke out at the unfurnished building on the last Saturday that month and firefighters were immediately suspicious as to the cause.
The damage was light, but once the blaze had been brought under control, police launched an investigation, taking the matter seriously, given the burning down of 3 other churches in Blantyre in that previous year alone. Investigations concluded that it was arson, or malicious damage but no person was ever caught.
