UWS – A look inside

Ahead of officially fully opening next month, University of the West of Scotland (UWS) have invited staff and pupils along for a sneak preview of the new building which will soon see pupils transferred from the old Almada Street building. UWS has new University premises based at Hamilton Technology Park, which means a huge catchment area for further education. The opening of the University sees a huge investment in the area and should create local jobs. How amazing that such a functional building is now on a site so close to the former Dixon’s Colliery 2 location. Progress!

Ruth Haughen, a local nursing student about to go into her 3rd and final year, kindly shared these great photos of her guided tour. Parts of the building are already open, as testing and maintenance gets underway and fitting out and decoration continues.

Tastefully decorated, the modern interior is stylish, comfortable and has students always in mind. There’s a massive well equipped aerobic, cardio and weights gym on the ground floor. A carpeted library, classrooms packed with IT, a canteen dinner hall and large atrium. Outdoor campus space, sports facilities and student accommodation and union are temporarily on the backburner for funding reasons, but are hoped to commence in the near future.

We’re sure you’ll agree, this is a fabulous, state of the art further education asset on our doorstep which will likely attract many of Blantyre youth. It is yet another example of another wonderful new building putting Blantyre and Hamilton firmly on the map!

Marian Maguire Let’s hope blantyre gets the recognition it deserves and it’s called blantyre campus and not Hamilton. Thankfully the big H is gone which was insulting to Blantyre and that area where so many Blantyre miners were killed.
Blantyre Project Redburn Farm Hamilton, have changed their name to Redburn Farm Inn. Glad they did that. I have so much more respect for them in doing so.
