High Blantyre Bank & PO

1920s Main Street Bank wm

This former tenement stood on Main Street, High Blantyre at the corner of Cemetery Road. Pictured in the 1910s is the former Bank at the corner and adjacent High Blantyre Post Office.

Two women stand outside the bank chatting in the street and knowing the location, the shadows below them suggest it is early in the morning. Perhaps they were waiting for the bank to open? A little boy stands in the doorway. Somebody’s already in the Post office having travelled there by bicycle.

Today this exact scene looks like this:

Gordon Paterson Wasn’t there a chippy at the end on the right?

Stephen Kelly There was a chippy there at some point. I was born in 1979 and can’t remember the building being there so must’ve been pulled down 70s or early 80s

Eleanor Clark Somehow I do not think that they were waiting on the Bank opening in this days people like us had never ever saw inside a Bank, and when I looked at that I said I could have Been our Granny as she stayed in Cemetery Road

James Dick was there a butchers there

Elizabeth Grieve I remember the buildings there. Think it was early 80’s when they were pulled down
