Greenfield Old Rows 1890

It’s incredible to think, but this rare old photo of Greenfield Old Rows was taken nearly 130 years ago! In 1890, a photographer captured this scene showing the tied miner’s house to Greenfield Colliery, not far from Burnbank.

Situated between Blantyre and Burnbank, Greenfield Colliery employed many Blantyre people, although of course these former cottages were once over the Blantyre boundary. Many miners lived in Springwell, renting the new homes that sprang up in the 1870’s and 1880’s.

These houses were right beside the colliery. The view would have been bleak, grey and black.

Fairlie Gordon Where exactly was this situated ?

Blantyre Project the exact site is now Andrew Paton Way modern housing estate, just off Bertram Street in Burnbank. Very close to Blantyre boundary but beyond Springwell.

  1. I think I might have an old photo of my uncle standing on the steps of the cottage!

  2. My grandparents lived at 14 Greenfield New Rows in 1930

  3. My great grandmother lived in gundersland Burbank. Do you know where that is?

  4. Further to my earlier enquiry, have now discovered that Greenfield Cottage was the name given to 75 & 76 Greenfield Old Rows. Still trying to find the names of the occupants in April 1944

  5. You know, I was wondering just the other day if any images of the Old Rows existed. What an excellent find!
