Blantyre Mining Disaster Recalled – Death of a Hero’s Wife

The terrible Scottish Mining disaster which occurred at Blantyre Colliery on 22nd October 1877 when 226 men and youths were killed is recalled by the death yesterday in her 84th year of Mrs George Madden, at her home, 7 Forrest Street, Blantyre.

Her husband, who died 30 years ago, was one of the few men who escaped with his life from the explosion, and for a full fortnight, he gave grand service in the rescue effort in bringing to the surface, the bodies of those who were killed.

On his death, Mrs Madden in recognition of her husband’s services at the time of the explosion, was placed on the fund which had been raised for widows and dependents.
