Work begins new UWS Campus

uwsContractors are now gearing up to commence construction work behind Hamilton Technology Park, Blantyre on the brand new University of the West of Scotland’s campus.

Spread over a significant 38 acres of greenfield site, the large university campus is based on land in High Blantyre and work will start this month (November). The final project is estimated to be worth £443million to the local economy over the next 25 years.

This will be a real jobs boost for Blantyre and surrounding areas, not just in terms of construction activities, but in all roles required for the future maintenance and operation of the facility.

Students are expected to relocate from Hamilton in 2018.

Councillor Eddie McAvoy of SLC commented, “This is a very important day for Hamilton and for South Lanarkshire. Having UWS commit to the town is a major achievement and now that we have the details of their plans to create one of the UK’s greenest eco campuses, the benefits of keeping the university here are clearer than ever.”

The Youth of Blantyre may be excited to learn that a state of the art university will be beside their homes, bringing short commutes, excellent standards of further education, extra curricular activities and a student union, all on our doorstep.

It will be situated behind HSBC just off Sydes Brae, although no access will be provided from Auchentibber, with all access and improved transport links coming from Hamilton Technology Park entrance, opposite Priestfield Cemetery.
