Jim Cochrane shared this charming photo adding, “Here’s a nice Picture of Haytime at Little Udston Farm late 1920s early 1930s. My Great Grandfather Robert Main is on the top of the Ruck with the rest of the family all helping . The railway and a pit Bing is shown in the Background. So Paul you should be able to tell which field it is.”
I do know this field. It is officially in Hamilton and where they’re standing is now Townhill Road. The embankment is still largely there, but of course the bing of Udston Colliery is now removed in the background. Homes, officially within Blantyre are now on the site of the former bing. Dalbeath Drive and Thorn Avenue in Westcraigs, both officially Blantyre are now where the bing was.
Looking back at Jim’s photo, it was clear enough for me to create some highlighted areas to zoom in on some detail. It’s clear to see how much hard work haytime was and I can well imagine the entire family being involved in some way.
