Around 2 weeks before the David Livingstone Centre opened, a press day was held, inviting reporters to come along to the newly renovated centre, and see for themselves the amazing transformation. The intention was that the press would cascade their excitement in all the local newspapers. A few photos are available from this event, including a photo of the stunning transformation of slum to museum and indeed a picture from the Hamilton Advertiser records of the distinguished gentlemen showing the reporters around.
The reporters concluded that the memorial centre preserved fittingly the birthplace of Blantyre’s famous son. Pictured is Rev James. I McNair, Chairman of the Executive Committee whose idea made the renovation of Shuttle Row possible in the first instance.
I often wonder why there is no McNair Street in Blantyre yet.
