Caroline Baird asked me, “Hi I was hoping you might be able to help me. I’m trying to find out for a family member how old the houses are in wallace place, if you have any information that could help. It would be much appreciated. Thank you!”
It’s my understanding that Wallace Place and the similar homes along Viewfield Avenue in the Village were built in 1933 and 1934. When the Livingstone Centre opened in 1929, many of the surrounding homes e.g Waterloo Row etc had been demolished and several families stayed with relatives until they could be accommodated in the county council’s new homes in this estate. The estate started construction in 1933 and was completed in 1934. The 1936 map certainly shows the homes being there.
On social media:
Mary Crowe My Aunt was married in January 1930 and I was led to believe her Banns were put in end of November when they stayed in Dixons Rows but she was married from Knightswood Terrace. If houses were built in 1933 then it the move was around 1933/34 as my mother was married in 1934 from Knightswood Terrace. Sadly I don’t have anyone to ask abouts dates
Mary Crowe Just been contacted by a friend who lives in Knightswood Terrace and she told me her Uncle was born there in 1929
The Blantyre Project great! This is the kind of excellent confirmation I like. wink emoticon Will add it to Blantyre Explained book.
