In late July 2015, I was emailed by a Blantyre man who sent this postcard of Crossbasket, and asked the question, ” I noticed below the window, what I think might be a blocked up early window, in the sketch it is hidden by the ivy, just wondered what you thought?”
It definitely IS a blocked up window. It was larger than the current windows, and arched. When the render was removed, I walked round the building looking for things like this. I took this photo in Feb 2015, which will confirm beyond any doubt. It is in the current bathroom of the Honeymoon suite (the whole 2nd floor of the tower is the bathroom!) The workmen didn’t infill it though. It was definitely infilled when they removed the render. The window must have been missed in photos or sketches, which either showed the tower covered in ivy, or in latter centuries, covered in grey render.
