1905 High Blantyre Church Halls

A great photo of a man standing at the corner of High Blantyre Church Halls, at the Junction of Main Street and Hunthill Road. What makes this Kirkton photo all the more remarkable is that it was taken over 110 years ago, around 1905. Photographed by David Ritchie, shared here by Alex Bowie, I wondered if the man was a miner, perhaps on his way to Dixons. Another man scurries in the pavement in the background, laden with tools, perhaps a joiner or mason.

The condition of the Church Halls themselves looks excellent, for these buildings at the time had only been there for around 12 years. Demolished in 1989, I don’t think I’ll ever forget the large arched doorway.

Interesting sidenote: The directional sign shown in this photo (the sign itself) was salvaged when the road was re-aligned and is now on the wall near the main door in John Carrigans, Broompark Road within the restaurant.

On social media:

  • KellyAnn Maguire Ramsay Is this were the care home is now?
    • The Blantyre Project It is, although the top of Hunthill was made wider. Kirk Care sits a little further back on both Main Street and Hunthill Road than the building profile in the above picture.
  • Thomas Barrett the signs lasted longer than the buildings.
