1965 Stonefield Public Park

Pictured is the Glasgow Road entrance to the Low Blantyre Public Park, more recently renamed McAnulty Park. This beautiful photo dates from 1964 or 1965 and sent in by Robert Stewart.

Underneath the Cowan Wilson Memorial Arch , the gardens are laid out nicely and well tended. Marigolds in the foreground, roses and geraniums in the mid sections and at the back roses growing over the wooden trellises. What a shame it was that removing this lovely entrance to such public space was allowed to happen. The arch is of course still there today, but gone are flowerbeds and the care taken with them.

  1. This is my memory of the stonefield public park, a favourite place for me and my sister to swing and run about, and for my Mum and Grannie to take us on those beautiful sunny days, the gardens were amazing, it upsets me to see how it has run down nowadays. On a trip home this year my sister, her husband and I took a journey to visit and were sorely disappointed, we couldn’t even get into the memorial (David Livingstone) and yes, I know it is having a make over, but why did it have to close down over summer?? I don’t want to remember the park as it is today, but as I remember it, as a child of the forties/fifties running about delighted with the sights, sounds and smells of the place then. So thank you for the beautiful pic from 1965!
