Pictured here in an unseen photo of 1935 is the construction works at David Livingstone Centre in 1935 building the iconic World Fountain. Contractors C D’O Pilkington Jackson have finished building the fountain and are landscaping the pavements around it. Workers shovels, hammers and materials lay around.
Stringlines mark out the pavements which have had turf removed and stone compacted as a base. The World Fountain was given to the David Livingstone Centre by Mrs Maxwell, wife of a local councillor. The fountain is made of marble and bronze and orientated so it behaves like a sundial.
