1920s Auchentibber War Memorial
This photo shows the Auchentibber War Memorial half way up Sydes Brae, near the junction with Auchentibber Road. The memorial faces out on to Sydes Brae Road and is situated near the roadside.
It looks newly constructed, allegedly using pillars from the fireplaces of the demolished Hamilton Palace. The tidiness of the site also supports this as being a photo taken fairly soon after it being built and shows how well kept it was.
In the background is the back entrance of the Auchentibber Inn building, which faced out on to the quoiting green which would have been to your left out the picture. To the left of the memorial is a little building which was located at the back of the Inn, serving as outside toilets and an adjacent store for the sporting equipment.
A Winter scene. Given the condition of the memorial, I’d estimate the photographer took this in 1923 at the opening, perhaps to show off the new memorial itself which was funded throughout 1921 and 1922. Thank you to Jim Cochrane for sharing this rarely seen postcard.
