Pictured here in 2009, is an emblum logo on the East Gable of Crossbasket House, High Blantyre. The initials are “J.C” which is the mark of James Clark, a well-known and respected merchant in Glasgow. James is credited with adding the Victorian part of the house on to the existing older tower. The house served his family well with up to eight members living there at one time. Waiting and serving on them, was an incredible ELEVEN people. Fair enough you may think , thats a big garden to manage. But no….as well as the house servants, in the 1850’s , there was also FIFTEEN people employed either fully or part time in the gardens and grounds. James Clark died on 15th September 1873.
