In 1263, Scottish forces clashed with invading Norwegian Vikings at Largs, Ayrshire, after a storm disrupted King Haakon IV’s fleet. This minor skirmish led to the collapse of the Norwegian campaign and ultimately the Treaty of Perth, which ceded the Hebrides to Scotland. Largs now honors this history with festivals and monuments.
