Good afternoon,

I came across a picture on the Blantyre Project website of the Blantyre Police Force from the 1890s and was wondering if you had any names of the police officers in the picture.

My 2nd Great-Grandfather James Moir Lawson served in the Blantyre Police Force until an accident with his leg meant he had to leave, where he moved to Motherwell. He was born on 18 Dec 1866 in Banchory-Ternan and died on 9 Dec 1944 in Motherwell. I'm not sure exactly when he was living in Blantyre, but his daughter Thomasina was born in Blantyre in 1893 so it would have been around this time period. I have shown the picture to my own Grandfather but he can't be sure if it was James in the picture.

I have also sent a picture of the obituary from the Motherwell Times which may provide further information to the 'contact us' page on the website.

If you could provide any information about this I would be grateful.

Leonie - Thanks for your interesting message. The men in the Police picture unfortunately aren’t named. I don’t have any notes on James Moir, but i did find out today that he lived in the Avenue Lodge House at Blantyre Works, certainly in 1895, though was not in the census by 1901. I suspect his accident took place around 1895, forcing his departure from the police and subsequent move to Motherwell. This was a significant decade for Blantyre works with the closure of the mills and many of the buildings around that location becoming derelict. It would very much have felt like “the end of an era”.
