I am researching my great-great-grandfather, Daniel Carty (also recorded as Carthy or McCarthy), who I believe may have died in the Hamilton Combination Poorhouse in June 1901.
I have located:
- 1901 Census – Daniel Carty, aged 66, widower, "formerly navvy", born Ireland, an inmate of the Hamilton Combination Poorhouse.
- Death registration – Daniel Carty, died 5 June 1901 in Hamilton Combination Poorhouse.
I am trying to establish whether this is my ancestor. I would therefore like to know whether any poorhouse admission, discharge, creed register, indoor relief register, case book, or application records survive for this individual.
I am particularly interested in whether the admission records might record any of the following:
- previous address,
- marital status,
- occupation,
- religion,
- county or parish of birth in Ireland,
- names of parents,
- names of children or nearest relatives,
- date of admission,
- transfer from another institution.
My confirmed ancestor was:
- Daniel McCarthy / Carthy / Carty
- born in Ireland about 1821–1823 (although later records vary),
- railway labourer/navvy and later furnace keeper,
- married to Agnes Campbell (died Glasgow in 1872),
- father of John, Mary, James and Thomas Carty,
- known to be alive in 1887.
If any admission or case records survive, I would be very grateful to know whether they contain information that could confirm or exclude this Daniel as my ancestor. If copies are available, I would also be happy to pay any applicable search or copying fees.
