In 1752, Colin Campbell, known as the “Red Fox,” was shot dead in Appin, Argyll. He was hated for evicting Jacobite clans from their lands on behalf of the British Crown. The killing shocked the Highlands—Campbell was gunned down while riding through the woods.
But the aftermath was even darker. James Stewart, known as James of the Glen, was arrested, tried, and hanged for the murder—though many believed he was innocent. The true assassin was never caught, and whispers of conspiracy still echo through Glencoe and Appin to this day.
Robert Louis Stevenson’s novel Kidnapped drew inspiration from this unsolved Highland mystery, keeping the legend alive.
