Jacobite Rising of 1745

In 1745Charles Edward Stuart, known as Bonnie Prince Charlie, landed in Scotland to reclaim the throne for the exiled Stuarts. Rallying Highland clans under the Jacobite banner, they swept south, capturing Edinburgh and winning at Prestonpans.

The march reached as far as Derby in England, but support faltered. Forced to retreat, the Jacobite army faced government forces at Culloden in April 1746. The defeat was brutal, crushing the rebellion and marking the end of the Highland clan system.

The ‘45 remains one of Scotland’s most romanticised yet tragic uprisings—a final, fierce attempt to change history.
