1920s Main Street Revisited

If 2024 was the year where AI saw image generation explode, 2025 is certainly the year for video generation. I’m simply astounded by the advances in technology this last year, especially tech which can take an image and animate it in an ever increasingly realistic manner.

Gone are the garish colours, the cartoony look and feel. It’s now possible to take an old image and animate it in a clever, believable way, which is starting to become difficult to tell if it’s real or not. I’m not a fan of this unregulated industry, but I am more than curious at the results and what it can do.

For example, let’s take a static image of Main Street in 1920. An image I’ve posted here before. Using video animation technology, I can now create a very short 5 second video of the scene, to show how it may have looked. A video that never existed 105 years ago. It’s not perfect by any means and still struggles with putting words and letters into the scene, but it IS getting there. People walking the streets, horses moving and a busy hustle and bustle that puts you right there. Just look at this!
