The Vanished Village of Culbin

Along the windswept Moray Firth coast, the once-thriving village of Culbin disappeared—swallowed by sand. In the late 1600s, fierce storms and years of deforestation destabilised the dunes. One day, the wind picked up… and Culbin was never seen again.

The people of Culbin were farmers and fishermen. But as trees were cleared and the land overworked, nature fought back. Sandstorms swept across fields and homes. One particularly brutal storm is said to have buried entire buildings in a single night.

What’s chilling? No one dug it back out. The land was abandoned, and today, Culbin remains a ghost village beneath the Culbin Forest, its rooftops and chimneys still rumoured to lie underfoot.

🌀 Could Scotland’s lost village still be hidden under the sand?
