1976 and 1977 didn’t have High Blantyre looking its prettiest. Construction of the extended EK Expressway was taking place and was quite disruptive to nearby residents, especially those in the relatively new housing estates (pictured)
In July 1977, residents had cause to complain about the noise from construction activities forcing Hamilton District Council committee to recommend that action should be taken against contractors Murdoch MacKenzie Ltd. The intention was to serve them a notice under environmental health against the Control of Pollution Act 1974. The notice was a warning. Either they cut down noise, or risk facing prosecution in the Sheriff Court.
Residents living just yards from the construction activities weren’t only worried about the construction noise, but also what it would mean for them when the road was complete. Traffic would surely create noise too and it raised the possibility that residents in High Blantyre should perhaps get some form of compensation. Such was the discussion in Summer 1977.
Local regional Councillor Malcolm Waugh had been fighting for compensation for these residents for some time and several visits by Councillors to see the effects the construction work was having had already taken place. Councillors concluding the construction work was a nuisance.
It’s unknown what (if any) compensation was given to residents beyond new double glazing to reduce the noise levels. If you know more, or were affected and can add to this story, please do let me know!
