Those of us a certain age may remembers children’s BBC1 programme, “Blue Peter”, and in particular in 1980 when they joined charity parter Oxfam for a Blue Peter Appeal to raise money with a Bring and Buy Sale Appeal.
Now, what’s the connection here? Well, like many schools across the Nation, St Joseph’s Primary School in Blantyre also took part in that fundraising, the children “doing their bit” to send funds to Blue Peter’s appeal.
After Sarah Greene and Peter Duncan announced the appeal was live, Blantyre kids sprang into action. Pupils and teachers of St Joseph’s raised an incredible £1,125 (about £7,000 in today’s money) which was sent in to help war torn Cambodia.
It was said the school actually broke a record in the amount raised by any single primary school. Blantyre children could certainly be very proud of the efforts they made that Springtime with their various fund-raising efforts….. and a pat on the back offered 44 years later.
Were YOU involved in this? Can you remember what the fundraisers were?
