‘Stonefield Parish Infant School’ being a bit of mouthful, the toddler’s school in Low Blantyre was nicknamed by locals as “The Wee School.”
It is often referred to by some people that the infant school was immediately behind Stonefield Parish School, but this wasn’t the case. The former infant school was actually situated more to the west, behind Nimmo’s Buildings and Bloomfield Cottage.
Built in 1892, it was located just off Victoria Street not far from the Stonefield Parish School, on central ground. The exact location of the wee school if it was there today would be inside the foyer of Blantyre ASDA!
Pictured in this fantastic colour photo from the 1970’s is the former Infant School, shared here by Rob Gordon. Even by this time, the ash playground grown over.
