Following the recent cleanup of the Memorial at Dalbeth to the Catholic Miners who died in the Blantyre Pit Explosion, Dave Barry kindly sent me this incredible 3D scan of the memorial stone. It records the condition, names and details on all sides of the stone with Dave telling me had he brought a “selfie stick” he could have captured the top too.
The output is a 3d wraparound scan as shown. Isn’t it amazing how new technology is assisting preserve history in such ways.
Interestingly, my history colleague Alex Rochead recently made the connection that not all the Catholic miners listed on this memorial are buried at Dalbeth, despite being listed on the stone. This was a surprise to me, but proven by Alex through various death certificates. Some are in High Blantyre Cemetery, others elsewhere. Knowing this only recently, I’m glad Jimmy Small and I made the call to include ALL miners regardless of their burial place on the High Blantyre Cemetery new 2022 memorials, remembering all who died in the Pit Disaster……regardless of their burial place.
