Minutes Silence

As we remember the Blantyre Pit Disaster today on its 145th Anniversary, we think of the 215 men and boys who lost their lives in High Blantyre, on 22nd October 1877. Those many lives lost in an instant and the immense grief and heartache for local families which followed.

Please join us in a minutes silence at 8.45am this morning, as a mark of respect and remembrance for all those souls lost.

As we do each year, we’ll be exploring stories and tales about Blantyre Pit Disaster with new research here on this website throughout this week.

Pictured yesterday is part of the common ground at High Blantyre, the final unassuming resting place for many of the deceased. May they all rest in peace.
