Now Demolished
Anybody passing through High Blantyre today may be shocked to see the Auchentibber War Memorial now completely demolished!
However, of course there’s a good reason. It’s currently being renovated and rebuilt, and as this picture shows, demolition work is complete. A new base is now being prepared today, Thursday 20th September 2018.
Throughout September and October , contractors will rebuild the memorial first erected in 1923, as it looked before, but stronger and better to cope with nearby, modern traffic. Soft landscaping is also planned.
The memorial, an important part of Blantyre heritage remembers 13 local Blantyre men and 1 Hamilton man who died in WW1. Community groups are planning an unveiling ceremony in due course.
