It’s difficult now to envisage how High Blantyre looked at a time before the EK Expressway and in an era of coal mining activity. This photo however, of High Blantyre is a good reminder of Blantyre’s former industrial landscape.
Taken in the 1950’s from a vantage point of Craigmuir Road behind the Old Parish Church, this scene looks over to the bottom of Sydes Brae and Dixons Pits 2 and 3. The two white cottages at Loanfoot are now gone, demolished to make way for the current A725 EK Expressway, but the little cottage on the left still exists at the bottom of Douglas Street (its got solar panels on it today).
The upper slopes to the right is now the Technology Park, in particular where HSBC is. All changed.
