1978 Glasgow Road near Clark Street
Back to Glasgow Road. This time 1978, a time when huge redevelopment was underway.
Blantyre residents go about their daily business, hands full of shopping, for Glasgow Road had just about everything you would ever need at that time.
Looking towards Burnbank, the picture is taken near the former junctions of John Street and Clark Street. Out of the picture on the right would have been Stonefield Parish Church. Do you know anybody in the picture. What are your memories of this part of Glasgow Road?

The Blantyre Project I’ve asked others about this who believe it to be scaffolding and demolition netting (protecting the road) around a building being demolished. This photo is too late for it to be Rosendale, but its in that sort of location. Chalmers building? I had wondered if it was the construction of J.R Reids, but the photo is too early. My own opinion on this is that it is scaffolding and netting, but not for a property…..its for the A725 structures being built for the EK Expressway, i.e the concrete EK Expressway bridge over Glasgow Road (currently near Lidl)

The Blantyre Project The date fits in well. The netting would have to be much higher than the structure to ensure no falling debris around the working area. Also if you look closely in the 1978, theres a tall derrick or crane, which i think is the pile driver for driving the sheet piles, ahead of the concrete works.
